In moments of quiet reflection, we often find ourselves yearning for connections to the past that shaped the world as we know it today. It’s with a profound sense of gratitude and humility that I recount a recent experience, one that offered me a tangible link to a pivotal moment in history.
In July of last year, during the vibrant and spirited Sioux Falls Air Show, an event that unites the marvels of aviation with the stories of remarkable individuals, I was presented with an opportunity that deeply moved me. I was invited to board a plane that is not only a marvel of engineering but a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of adversityโthe legendary “That’s All, Brother.”

This aircraft is etched in the annals of United States history for its critical role in the Normandy campaign of 1944, a chapter that was instrumental in our fight against tyranny. Named to convey a message of determination and a longing for peace, “That’s All, Brother” led a fleet of 13,000 courageous paratroopers into a battle that would change the course of World War II. Sitting in the very seats that these brave souls once occupied, and peering out of the door from which they leapt into uncertainty, was a humbling experience that words scarcely do justice.
For those who hold a deep appreciation for history and wish to connect with this iconic aircraft, the Commemorative Air Force offers the opportunity to purchase a flight on “That’s All, Brother.” Imagine soaring through the skies, enveloped by the same sense of duty and courage that guided those soldiers. It’s an experience that promises to leave an indelible mark on your heart, reminding us of the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today.

My heartfelt thanks go to the SD Air National Guard and a dear friend who made this unforgettable journey possible. Their kindness and dedication to preserving our history have allowed me and others to experience a piece of our nation’s legacy firsthand.

Let us never forget the valor and sacrifice of those who came before us. May their legacy inspire us to foster compassion and unity, reminding us that in the face of challenges, we too can make a difference. This experience has not only been a journey through history but a call to remember and honor the past, as we strive to build a future marked by understanding and peace.
