Thirty years of hometown songs, and a lawn full of people who grew up with them —this is a night I won’t forget.
01 · The Lawn
Thirty years on, the lawn was full.
More than 30 years after KORY and the FIREFLIES formed right here in Sioux Falls, thousands of people packed the lawn at Levitt at the Falls last night to see them perform.
02 · The Crowd
Not just a concert crowd — a community.
And it wasn’t just a concert crowd. Families filled the lawn, kids were everywhere, dogs came along for the night, and it seemed like every few minutes there was another familiar face to say hello to.
It was a pretty great picture of the community Kory and the band have built around their music over the years.
03 · The Band
Sioux Falls songs, Hall of Fame history.
Kory Van Sickle formed KORY and the FIREFLIES in Sioux Falls in 1994, with songs including “Sometimes,” “Virginia,” “Pop Fly,” “Everyone,” “She’s Comin’ Back Again” and “Let It Shine.”
Their career has since earned them induction into both the South Dakota and Iowa Rock & Roll Halls of Fame.
04 · Father & Son
A moment in front of a hometown crowd.
One of the highlights came when Kory was joined onstage by his son for a performance together. Seeing the two of them share that moment in front of a hometown crowd was incredibly special.
05 · First Time
First time with the band, first time at Levitt.
This was my first time photographing KORY and the FIREFLIES and my first time shooting at Levitt. I really appreciated Kory reaching out personally and asking me to cover the show.
I saw a lot of amazing friends, met a few new ones, took a whole lot of photos, and walked away understanding a little better why this band has meant so much to Sioux Falls for so long.
This is a night I won’t forget.
