What Have You Been Up To?

What a busy July it has been. Epic weddings, amazing concerts including Mitchell TenPenny and Portugal. The Man, The Paisley Pod, and some really fun landscape explores. For weddings we have stormed 50 yard lines during championship football games, shot amazing streamer fireworks, and we have been to Air Madness for some trampoline and obstacle course action – could it be any more fun?

Cheers to fun, cheers to adventure, and cheers to new and old friends!

Get Out There: Black Hills 2019

What an amazing trip in the month of May to The Black Hills of South Dakota. I was expecting some warmer temps and beautiful sunrises/sunsets as we all welcomed Spring into the area… that was not the case. My buddy Bryan (Raskal Photography) and I got to see it all from a weather standpoint. Intense, dense fog followed by ice showers and snow. Spring showed more as we took some long exposure near Spearfish Falls and Roughlock Falls. The clouds never left our ceiling the entire trip but photography is an opportunistic art and you have to make the very best of whatever conditions you are given. So, from long exposures to panoramic images, tilt-shift photography, and still images where visibility was incredibly limited, these were some of the highlights of the trip.

Some Experiences are Worth Blogging About: Devil’s Tower

Last summer, Raskal Photography (more information on him in the partnership’s section) took a trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota. These trips have become an annual thing as Bryan and I have progressed more and more into the professional photographers that we are now. There was a night in particular that has really stood out. I have never considered myself an astrophotographer and even some of the most basic techniques have been foreign to me. This is mostly because of limited experience and opportunities. I always say that photography is an opportunistic art. Light pollution where I live, being a busy family man, and so many other factors have contributed to my limited experience. One night can change so much. Under perfect conditions (clear sky, warm temperatures, no moon), Bryan and I hiked around Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. We weren’t hiking for the exercise, we were exploring where we were anticipating the best angles would be for night photography later.

Once nightfall came it was literally time to learn by doing. I rotated through settings on my camera, adjusting really only my shutter to see how much exposure time I needed before I started to see the stars that my own eye couldn’t. As the night progressed, we noticed the Milky Way begin to appear from our right. Over the next two hours (don’t worry, we had good beer) it made its way upwards towards Devil’s Tower. I am now confident in my ability to anticipate timing of stars and the galaxy, I am comfortable with the settings to capture this amazing opportunity in photography, and I am appreciative of what is in our night sky.

We All Thought Winter Was Gone

Living in South Dakota is interesting. Lots of people not familiar with the area expect that we are plains and predictable weather. We do have beautiful plains but we have lots to see in the form of nature that makes us unique. Our weather is anything but predictable! When it comes to weather it seems like most people want the same conditions for ever photo and every shoot. There is preferred weather for photography but it is important to learn to embrace whatever nature chooses to give you. This applies to nature, landscape, weddings, engagement sessions and more – all the same. I don’t mind a nice little white surprise in April like this, as long as it doesn’t last long!

Taking a Photo is Easy, Making a Photo is Hard.

Thus far in the end of March and the beginning of April, I have been photographing my favorite thing which is people. Taking the photo isn’t so hard, once you know the settings, understand the lighting, and know how to accomplish what you what to accomplish, the technical piece of it isn’t so difficult. An artist has hit their stride when they are making photographs and not just taking them. In order to make a photograph of a person, you have to capture a personality and of course “tell a story”. I strive for this in every session with every person I do photos with.

“An artist has hit their stride when they are making photographs and not just taking them.”

Coming up in April, lots of events, lots of concerts, lots of families, lots of fashion photography. These cameras are going to be busy.

The Month of March and Trying New Things

The Month of March has been incredibly busy. Living in Sioux Falls we got to feel the temperatures change from devastatingly cold to bearable Spring temperatures. The air was so cold for so many days that we were able to see sun dogs and other very unique sun flares (pictured) because ice crystals were suspended in the sky! While the temperature was cold, the concert scene was HOT. I got to photograph some of the biggest stars in the world including KISS, Dierks Bentley, Dylan Scott, and Tyler Farr.

The Paisley Pod announced that they will be opening a retail store. How exciting for Chrystal, her family, and her team that help make the boutique what it is. I enjoy our weekly photo shoots and it really shows.

Also in March, I really focused on two areas where I felt my portfolio was weak and the opportunity for growth was available. Edgier, boudoir or lingerie shoots were something I wanted to show was a skill I had and then I realized that the talent on the other side of the lens is what really makes these shoots special. Speaking of having something very special on the other side of the lens, I focused a lot on maternity photos this month. While I still have a few more mommy-to-be shoots, I have really enjoyed taking these photos and sharing them.

The “New Photography Standards”

When I started photography I made a list of all of the things I didn’t like about photography and worked backwards from there. I made sure to have a response for everything that bothered me as a customer.

“When I started photography I made a list of all of the things I didn’t like about photography and worked backwards from there.”

I started with price, vowing to never over-price my services and only offer them at a price that I found reasonable, consistent from client to client, and at a price that was good for clients AND business (not just one or the other). After price, I recognized that in all my experiences as a photography customer, I was not pleased with turn-around-times and I have made it a point to offer the best turn-around-times in the industry. For EVERY project, I guarantee a 24 to 72 hour turn-around-time and provide all photos, edited, by an electronic link.

“…I recognized that in all my experiences as a photography customer, I was not pleased with turn-around-times and I have made it a point to offer the best turn-around-times in the industry.”

Finally, as a fan or customer of photography I wanted diversity. When I purchased a session or a product, I didn’t want my photos to look like everyone else’s so I made it a priority to make every session as unique and beautiful as the subject. Collectively, I call all of this the “new photography standards” – a modern and customer friendly way of doing photography.

“…I didn’t want my photos to look like everyone else’s so I made it a priority to make every session as unique and beautiful as the subject.”
